So everyone was raving about how Luke was only in TFA for like 20 seconds and said nothing but can we actually talk about this.
He is missing, no one knows where he is, only Han sort of knows why, but there are no details. I was almost as desperate as Leia was to find him. Because he’s our Luke Skywalker, the original hero, and he’s not just our hero, but theirs. Rey literally thought he was a myth, no one knows anything about him, apart from us. I don’t know about you but I felt strangely close to him because of this.
And then everything goes up in flames and I am sat there in the cinema like “Luke please just come and save us.” I felt almost angry, but then R2 wakes up and they have the map and Rey goes to him, and then I understood.
The look on his face. I had prayed he would come and save everyone, but look at his face because he couldn’t. Luke Skywalker, who always has to save everybody. Who faced Darth Vader and the Empire to save a girl he’d seen in a hologram he didn’t even know. Who fearlessly saw the best in Vader when no one else would.
He looks so utterly defeated, like life has beaten him down and he’s been unable to do anything about it. That pure grief on his face as he looks at Rey holding his father’s lightsaber, his first lightsaber, made me feel so incredibly guilty. Because heroes hurt too. Like Han said, “Luke blamed himself.” ‘And whilst heroes are busy saving everyone, who saves them?
Mark Hamill’s acting in this scene moved me to tears. It is some of the best I have ever seen.
He didn’t need to say a word.
Hmmm…
My sentiments exactly. His face spoke volumes. He just looked tired. From responsibility. From defeat. From loss. I mean all those years passed since we last saw him and it was like every question we all had about where he’d been, why he’d hid, why he ran, and why he hadn’t yet returned was etched clearly in the lines of his face and the weariness of his eyes.
And I remember looking up at him as a child and thinking how it didn’t get more golden than this, and now I feel it was wrong of me. Like I always used to want to wrap Anakin up in blankets and hold him, but want Luke to wrap ME up in blankets, so to see him so vulnerable was upsetting.
Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye,
Your hand, your tongue; look like th’ innocent flower,
But be the serpent under’t.
this concept art of kylo & rey is obviously referenced to adam’s photoshoot, correct? and on the VOGUE website they described this as, “Actor Adam Driver makes stormy romance with model Daria Werbory.”
stormy romance
This picture definitely IS based on the photoshoot. Look at Rey’s hair. It’s basically identical to the model on the right, down to the lock of hair above her right eye that catches the light. They WERE looking at this picture of Adam when the concept on the left was produced. I’m even certain that the concept art is a result of photobashing this very picture.
Chances are they were looking at a lot of Adam Driver’s publicity photos and using them as a means to design and define the character that would become Kylo Ren. And yes, they chose an explicitly romantic/possessive photoshoot (I think the other pictures from that particular photoshoot include the infamous goat picture) to base a concept art to depict the Rey/Ren relationship.
This IS highly relevant, because anyone with two eyes who watched TFA can see that Kylo has not been written and is not being performed as merely a villain who views the hero as a pest who foils his evil plot, and this concept indicatives that he was not conceived as such either. He’s a young man, faced with a beautiful woman who is a match for his own power, and his every interaction with her is coloured by curiosity, intensity, and awkwardness, like a youth who does not really know how to talk to women, whereas his interaction with EVERY other character is tinged with contempt, anger, and haughtiness.
None of this is a coincidence. Basing concept art off romantic photoshoots is not a coincidence. This is the artists attempting to show how Kylo views Rey; as someone desirable, someone to corrupt, someone to possess… someone he would take into his arms in an embrace.
Rey’s reaction to hearing about the Jedi Killer || Rey’s Force Vision
This really struck me on one of my early viewings of the film. The close-up on Rey’s face, her expression seemingly indicating that she is at a remove from her physical surroundings, won’t have been accidental.
The camera is lingering on her face because the filmmakers want us to witness her response to that piece of information. This could simply be because Rey is going to be revealed as a Jedi, or it could be more specific and a hint that Rey was one of the young Jedi learners herself.
This film really is a magnificent mystery box, and I love it.
so sorry to be late(cuz i got to know about this project jus yesterday..)
Father Ren😍
Other random observations from the SW:TFA Junior Novelization
Aside from the fact that the author is QUITE preoccupied with Kylo Ren’s physical appearance more than any other character’s, some other stuff I took note of:
– The book is told in sections of third-person limited narratives, which I love because it echoes ASOIAF. Honestly I don’t think I can read anything any other way from now on, LOL.
– It’s supposed to be for ages 8-12, but I found it really sophisticated for elementary-age kids! Not just in the language but in the themes and emotional nuance and whatnot. Maybe I’m just underestimating the reading comprehension skills of 8-12-year-olds?
– Even CHEWY gets a POV section??? LMAO. It’s a good one, though – it’s immediately after Han is killed. So, it’s super sad but also gives insight into his decision not to kill Kylo.
– Lots more Poe! This book actually gives us what happened to him after he crash-landed on Jakku with Finn and how he got back to the Resistance. Since this book is considered official canon, it makes me wonder/worry if Poe really IS the #3 in the Holy Trinity of the new trilogy along with Rey and Finn, and not Kylo. Not sure of the timeline of this book in relation to the film, but I wonder if it wasn’t just simply a response to the reception Poe received from audiences? So then they decided to build him up more in this book?
– This book lays on the Rey/Finn shippiness reeeeaaaal thick. Even moreso than the film. Thing is, they kinda lay some groundwork for Rey/Poe too?? They actually meet face-to-face in the book (during the scene when R2 comes back to life and they put the map together). There’s actually some chemistry there too, I felt. Almost as if the author is trying to cover his bases in case either pairing goes canon, LMAO. Also, the last line from their scene together is: “Poe had a feeling their paths would soon cross again.” Again, more evidence, it seems, that Poe might be the third in the Trio.
– So, where does that leave Reylo? I gotta say, I didn’t really feel like the book was laying too much (if any) groundwork for a potential Rey/Kylo “romance” or anything approaching it. Rey seems to express only one emotion towards Kylo, and that is RAGE. Which, you know, you can hardly blame her, but there’s little nuance outside of that. Kylo, on the other hand, does most definitely display an acute fascination and curiosity about Rey, so if anything, the book is building up a one-sided obsession on Kylo’s part.
– But I have to say, the language the author chooses when describing Kylo and Rey’s interactions is very… sensual?? Talking about how Rey can still “feel him” even when she’s not looking at him, describing his reading of her mind as “tendrils”, having him physically touch and stroke her face, addressing her by her name… whew! It should also be noted that he removes her restraints after she wakes up in the interrogation room. It should definitely be noted that this book goes out of its way to clarify that Rey was not afraid of Kylo in this scene – pissed off af, yes, but fear, no. In fact, the only fear she feels in this scene is HIS fear!
– The book also explicitly states that Rey could have killed Kylo in the forest but deliberately chose not to. This is told from Kylo’s POV, so we don’t get a definitive explanation as to WHY, but it’s clear that she had every opportunity but declined, instead just walking away to tend to Finn.
– The book makes an interesting parallel between Rey and Kylo though – Rey actually states to Leia, right before leaving to find Luke, that this must feel like deja vu all over again, because of how Leia sent away Ben to Luke too. EEP!
– Rey’s interactions with Unkar Plutt made my skin crawl. Almost feels like a deliberate parallel with Kylo and Snoke.
– Leia’s one POV section, following Han’s death and the destruction of Starkiller Base, reminded me a lot of Cat’s chapters following Ned’s death… all about how she wanted nothing more in the world than to be alone with her pain and grieve for her family, but she can’t because she needs to appear strong for her warriors. UGH….
– “In his last few seconds of life, he thought of the Falcon and his furry first mate and his beautiful princess, but he saw only his son. The darkness in his eyes. And the sadness. Han forgave his son for what he had done. He prayed someday his son would forgive him in turn.” (ooooommmmmgggggg)
Industrial Light & Magic has released high-quality versions of some of their concept art for The Force Awakens, as seen in the book ‘The Art of the Force Awakens’; view the rest on their website.
Stunned by his own action, Kylo Ren fell to his knees. Following through on the act ought to have made him stronger, a part of him believed. Instead, he found himself weakened.
