I think the thing I love most about The Last Jedi is how Ben Solo/Kylo Ren’s story feels like a continuation of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in two very important ways.
1) If Darth Vader hadn’t died after killing his Master, would he really have been able to turn around and support the Rebels in their cause? Through the actions of Kylo Ren I think we get our answer… no. I’m inclined to believe he too would have desired to take control of the Empire, not destroy it. He chose to save his son, but he did not choose to support his son’s cause.
2) What would have been the dynamic between Darth Vader and Padme Amidala if she’d survived after giving birth? Obviously, she could not have stood by while Darth Vader took over the galaxy, but imagine the sorrow she would have felt having to fight against the man she loves. We see this question answered through the struggle between Kylo and Rey. They desire to protect each other, but their opposing views would have kept them at odds.
It really feels like these four characters echo in each other… the same spirit, like a reincarnation finally being allowed to play out to it’s finish.
watching these movies and I noticed that both Anakin/Padme and Han/Leia have a emotionally fraught misunderstanding scene where the lady says “hold me” and her love interest holds her tenderly
so now I’m wondering if we’re going to get Rey saying “hold me” to Ben in IX. Rey and Ben have already done the “don’t be afraid/I’m not afraid” parallel like his parents and grandparents. Let. Them. Hug.
Guys. Ben and Rey connect through the Force bond after his mother dies and he asks her to hold him I’M NOT CRYING
In TFA, Kylo just assumes the saber belongs to him. But the Force knows he’s only thinking in one manner, so while there’s a bit of a tug, it eventually goes to Rey. The Force knows that at the moment, she’s the true owner of this saber. Her light, compassion and love is what the darkness needs. She’ll help Kylo to bring balance.
However, in TLJ, the scene changes. The Force knows together they can bring balance of both light and dark to the Galaxy. Not one over the other because just like yin-yang, both light and dark have one another inside of them. But the two of them are missing that point, especially Rey. She thinks that Kylo can be Ben again overnight. That he’ll just turn to her side and all will be good. But that’s not what fate has planned. While she may have brought him hope, Rey missed the message. They both did. That’s why instead of going to her again, it exploded into two pieces.
Yoda knew this and burnt down the tree. Kylo was right in that they need to let old ways go. It’s time for change.
So ultimately, the Force wants them to figure out that they are two halves of the same thing. They can do this. Episode 9 will be about how they will come together to achieve this.
And by the way, is so blatantly obvious that it was the FORCE that created their bond. Thank you, and goodbye.
@gwendy85 requested that I shared this with you all on here so I hope you enjoy! I was inspired by a tumblr user who found this parallel and I can’t remember their user but if it’s you feel free to message me and I will credit you 🙂
