I think it’s extremely telling that Luke referred to their relationship as that of Master/Apprentice and NOT Uncle/Nephew. Ben’s isolation began much earlier than when he went to Snoke.
“Who would destroy everything I love because of what he would become.” This line also distances Ben from those that Luke loves. Ben should be one of those people Luke loved. He was his nephew. But instead he was just seen as an apprentice, someone who would become dark someday and was therefore expendable, at least in that moment.

Earlier, an unmasked Kylo Ren allows Rey to look into his eyes, and then see his fears when he is attempting to pry information from her mind. Kylo Ren shows a sign of wanting to be seen as a man and not a monster when he rips off his mask after Rey calls him a “creature in a mask” in this same scene.

So that’s why he rips off his shirt too 😏
Th-this is on an official website?!?!
Yes, she put it in the source but here is the article in case you can’t click on it (mobile…<.<).
The subtitle, “OUR FIRST MEETING WITH THE VILLAIN IN THE FORCE AWAKENS TELLS US ONLY PART OF WHO HE IS – OR WANTS TO BE.”
Why people complaining a Skywalker acting like a Skywalker? Vader cut off his son’s hand after he offered to rule the galaxy together. Anakin nearly choked his wife to death over it. Luke jumped into a dark pit to what he probably thought was his death and screamed “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO” for an unbreaking 3 whole fucking minutes bc he has daddy issues. Luke astral projected himself across the galaxy to troll his nephew. Ben attacked a planet bc his girlfriend didn’t want to become Empress of the Galaxy. What’s fucking new honestly? Why are y’all surprised this boy is acting like a Skywalker?
“If fans know anything about Kylo, it’s that whatever he feels, he feels it strongly. Rey means something to him, and he’s not about to let that go.” (x)
Those were Kylo’s words to Rey in TFA but it seems he was talking as much about himself as he was talking about her. Knowing now what we know about that fateful night with Luke, it’s no wonder Ben looks like he hasn’t slept properly in years. Now excuse me while I cry in my lil corner
i really love how, in some ways, rian has gone out of his way in tlj to invert reylo’s dynamic from tfa. whereas kylo was constantly seen arresting rey’s agency in tfa, in tlj he is constantly deferring to it. and this is important given how the force bond is couched as an involuntary phenomenon – in these moments, neither of them have any measure of control over when or how the bond unfolds – he is asking questions of her; he is reassuring her. rey then decides to bring herselfto kylo, instigating the entire middle chapter of her arc; she decides to team up with kylo; he offers her his hand in that huge, desperate gesture where he effectively hands power over to her. he sees her independence, and desires her to make her own choices. his posture at the end of the film ofc highlights, in a thousand different ways, how he is still ironically deferent, even after he’s allegedly ‘reverted’ to his former self (referring to her again as ‘the girl’)– she is the character of resolve and of action, standing up, choosing to shut the door; whereas he is motionless, almost paralysed by inaction. like i literally can’t get over how feminist reylo is in tlj
((Hey, last week’s anons. See, I’m not the only one who saw that. Open your eyes.))
according to the art book, kylo consciously adopts vader iconography to “haunt luke,” so all those posts about kylo seeing vader as more “worth saving” than himself are 100% accurate.
Two times she’s asked someone she’s come to care about, not to go. (not counting her flashback as a kid)
In TFA, when Finn came clean and told her he was a Stormtrooper, he said he wanted to leave and asked Rey to come with him. She looked totally thrown off and confused because she thought they were in this thing together to see it through to the end. She asks him, imploringly, “Don’t go”. She was devastated that he wanted to leave and she couldn’t bring herself to go with because in that moment, helping BB8 back to the resistance was priority #1. So he told her to take care of herself and turned to leave. It hurt her to see him go.
In TLJ, Ben turns to her saying they can bring a new order to the galaxy, asking her to join him. She looks totally thrown off and confused because she thought they were in this thing together, that he would go back with her. She begs him “Don’t do this, Ben. Please don’t go this way.” She was devastated that he couldn’t follow her and she couldn’t bring herself to follow him. Because her friends, the family she’s made for herself, are part of the resistance and they’re in danger. They need her help to and she can’t turn her back on them. It hurts her to know he won’t be coming with her.
The look she gives when she realizes they’re not staying with her hurts me, because this poor girl can’t bear the feeling of being left alone and haha I’m making myself tear up…
But in the end, Finn came back for her. And I think someday, if that look at the end of the film tells us anything, Ben will too.
Because despite how they parted, connected the way they are, they mean something to each other now. In a way, Ben’s part of her family now too, or at least she wanted him to be.
